Sierra Nevada
Granada is unique because of the strong contrasts that can be experienced here. Between the high plateau where the valleys of Guido and Baza are situated and the city of Granada, the visitor finds huge mountains with everlasting snow that conform the Sierra Nevada, part of the Cordillera Penibética (Epileptic chain of mountains). From here, the tropical coast of the Mediterranean sea is less than 60 km away. From the Mirador de San Cristobal (San Cristobal viewpoint), the visitor can enjoy this beautiful landscape, the Alhambra and behind it, the pattern of the sierra to the southwest of the city.
Sierra Nevada National Park includes a vast amount
of mountains of heights 3,000 meters of more resulting as the
highest mountain massif of western Europe. Although most of this
range is located in the country of Granada, it extends to the
east to die off in the country of Almería.
Sierra Nevada has become an important place to enjoy winter sports,
adventures and the snow. Its home to ski resort Sol y Nieve (Sun
and Snow) that features 19 ski lifts as well as 67 km of ski runs.
It also offers a high quality hotel complex.
This par is also a unique place to go hiking
climbing (rocks as well as ice), horse riding or dog sledding.
The visitor will also enjoy its ponds and places of perpetual
snow as well as its little Mediterranean forests.
