Medinaceli information
Located on a small hill overlooking the Jalón valley. I was named Ocilis by the Romans and Medina Selim by the Arabs.
The town has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site
thanks to its wealth of monuments.
We can admire the Roman arch, from the 2nd and 3rd century, one
of only three arcades left in Spain; the collegiate church, in
the flamboyant Gothic style and built in the 16th century on the
site of the Romanesque church of Santa María la Mayor,
outstanding inside which is the Romanesque crypt, the carving
of Cristo de Medinaceli from the 16th century and the organ from
the 18th century; and the convent of Santa Isabel, founded in
16th century by nuns of the Order of St. Clare. Significant among
the civil buildings are the magnificent palace of the Dukes of
Medinaceli, from the 17th century and remodelled in the 18th century,
which contains Roman mosaics inside; and to the north, the remains
of the old Arab castle. Although the location is unknown, it is
said that Almanzor, the powerful and feared leader of Muslim Spain,
was buried in these lands.
