The Txindoki route: The Basque Cervine

The best known triangle-shaped mass in the region: the Txindoki, also called the Basque Cervine, is an important mountain overlooking the Amundarain area, a natural pyramid where the people worship Our Lady of the Remedies.

If we leave Donostia-San Sebastian taking the N-1 road towards Tolosa, after approximately 20 kilometres we will find the exit for Alegia. This town build next to the Oria river, has some very interesting monuments, like the famous "Old Bridge" or "Zubi Zaharra", built in the medieval times which spans across the river. Also, San Juan Bautista Church, of a neoclassical style, has an excellent gothic Christ.

We leave towards Amezketa, and we enter the heart of Mount Txindoki. Amezketa is presided over by St. Bartholomew's Church, which is surrounded by beautiful examples of traditional architecture. From here we go up a road with beautiful panoramic views of Abaltzisketa, from which there is a very good view of the Txindoki and all its contours. The Town Hall, the tyipical houses with projecting roofs, and San Juan Bautista church, with a beautiful Romanesque facade, make up a harmonious group that highlihts the beauty of Abaltzisketa.

In a small climb we arrive at a place known as Larraitz, on the slopes of Mt. Txindoki. Here is the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Remedies, highly worshipped in the whole area. Many paths and mountain tracks begin at this point, which will delight us with the wonderful landscapes.

Once we leave Larraitz we go down towards Zaldibia and Ordizia, but before we must take the turnoff to the right, which indicates Gainza, to get to this small hamlet, the highest in the Goierri, and from which we can enjoy beautiful views.

Shortly after, we arrive at Ordizia, with the beautiful Assumption church, of undoubted artistic value. The church bell tower stands out for its baroque style. Also worth visiting are the Barreneche Palace and the monumental market square. To return to Donostia-San Sebastián we must take again the N-1 road.
