Mao Nature
Thanks to the considerable importance of its natural areas and landscape, most of the northern part of the municipal district of Mahon has been declared a protected space. S'Albufera des Grau, the island's only nature park, is a veritable showcase of the habitats and flora and fauna that populate the zone.
S'Albufera des Grau
In the island's northeast are S'Albufera des Grau, Illa d'en Colom
and Cap de Favàritx Nature Park, designated as the core
area of the Biosphere Reserve, in addition to Menorca's largest
marshlands, which include agricultural and pasture lands, white
pine and holm oak forests, cliffs, dunes and beautiful beaches.
Part of a dune system, the lagoon of S'Albufera des Grau is almost 2 km. long with a water surface area of 70 hectares. Inside the lagoon, small vegetation-covered islets emerge where birds usually roost. The diverse array of waterfowl constitutes one of the protected space's most interesting features. The presence of amphibians and reptiles, particularly the white snake and Italian lizard, is also worth noting.
An endemic blue-green species of the Balearic lizard lives on En Colom island, some 200 metres from the northeast coast.
